10 Facts About Aboriginal Art

I'm currently sitting in Uluru and have just spent two days learning about Aboriginal art and the culture of the Anangu Tribe. Here's ten facts about aboriginal art you might not have known. Special thanks to Voyages Australia for the behind the scenes look and the artists of the Anangu tribe for speaking with me. 

 

1. Only boys can play the digeridoo.

 

2. Dot paintings are actually arial views of the land from above.

3. There are male and female roles in art and dance in the Anangu culture. Boys can paint and dance Kangaroos, as they are seen as masculine figures. Women can dance and paint birds as they are seen as feminine.

 

4. Most of the dances are inspired by animals and nature.

 

5. They use all parts of the resources for their art work. Nothing goes to waste and paint is made with very little water.

 

6.  Colors represent feelings.

 

7.  Concentric Circles represent water.

 

8. Of the 5,000 Anangu tribes man living at Uluru, over 1200 are working artists! That's a huge percentage.

 

9. Artists are very reveared by the community as they make the most money. But they are celebrated as a community rather than a singular performer. 

 

10. Dances and stories are passed down from generation to generation. Nothing is written down.
