Sukhishvili
22.10 8pm “A folk gem with classical facets” Following the overwhelming reception to its high-energy show in 2009, the exceptional Georgian dance group returns to impress Hong Kong with its super-vitality and virtuosity. Speed, strength and agility are to the fore in exciting feats of dagger-throwing and sabre-wielding, reflecting Georgians’ characteristic daring and courage, while light-hearted scenes depict old city customs in fresh ways as traders and artisans celebrate the joys of everyday life. Refined wedding traditions and high-society dances are also given a new appearance, including the regal Samaia, and romantic Qartuli, both timeless classics not to be missed. Together with the men’s amazing point work and women’s graceful glides, the performance superbly combines contemporary elan with authentic folk roots in a dance extravaganza set to delight and enthral. |

TIMBER!
August 7-8, 10 7:30pm You can almost smell the fresh-cut pine logs and the sweat of the lumberjacks as the performers of Cirque Alfonse rollick to traditional music. This young circus troupe formed by a family and their friends from Quebec draws on their folk roots as inspiration for TIMBER!, an original creative project that is clearly off the beaten track. Among the daring feats on display, performers juggle with axes, somersault across razor-sharp log saws, and blend bouncy clog dancing with spellbinding aerial acrobatics, all accompanied by a live band singing colourful Québécois folk songs. There’s even a bungee-jumping granddad! Together with other heart-stopping routines and comic interludes, it adds up to an enthralling encounter from start to finish. |
