The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee
1-5 May 19:30, 5 May 14:30. An eclectic group of six mid-pubescents vie for the spelling championship of a lifetime. While candidly disclosing hilarious and touching stories from their home lives, they spell their way through a series of words, hoping never to hear the soul-crushing, pout inducing, life un-affirming “ding” of the bell that signals a spelling mistake. Sweet and shy Olive brings only her best friend (the dictionary) with her to the bee; bold and hyperallergic speller William Barfee uses his “magic foot” to propel him to greatness; former champion Chip is struggling with his burgeoning puberty; easily distracted Leaf is unconvinced that he’s smart enough to be a challenger; overachiever Marcy is disappointed by her consistent success; and politically aware Logainne Schwartzandgrubenierre only wants to impress her gay dads. In hilarious, touching, and catchy songs, each speller reveals his/her hopes, struggles, and passions as they make their way through the competition. Winner of the Tony and Drama Desk Awards for Best Book, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee has charmed audiences across the world with its effortless wit and humour. Featuring a fast-paced, wildly funny and touching book by Rachel Sheinkin and a truly fresh and vibrant score by William Finn, this bee is one unforgettable experience. |

Beauty and The Beast
December 8-10 at 7.30pm
Afternoon shows on December 9-10 at 2.30pm In the words of Barry White, ‘Too much of anything is not good for you baby. But I don’t know about that.’ The timeless tale of Beauty and The Beast gets a retro kick in the bellbottom pants when it takes the spotlight this December! Reviews described Laurence Boswell’s Beauty and the Beast as “a brilliantly improvised world that is completed in the mind’s eye of the audience.” First performed at the RSC in 2003, this production is now reimagined by the DSHK Company. With the help of the director, Vincent Warren, Jonathan Daly (movement director) and Owen Liggett (musical director), the students will recreate this classic tale through movement, acting and singing. At Drama School HK our specialised group of practitioners strives to support and develop our student’s skills, whilst providing them with the necessary platform to express their own ideas. During our weekly rehearsals, teamwork is essential; the cast is being challenged to create ideas organically and perform them with clarity while at the same time fostering a sense of community within the company. Join us as Drama School HK lycra suits-up to take you on a wondrous journey from renaissance to retro, where we will emerge glittering and sequin-spangled in fandango boogie land! No disco ball shall be left unturned! |
