5 Artistic Ways to Celebrate Usagi

  22-9-13

Hong Kong is a funny place when it comes to typhoons. While places like Taiwan and the Philippines are running for shelter; we're running for the nearest bar for happy hour specials. Super Typhoon Usagi is predicted to be the strongest typhoon to hit HK in 34 years. We're all expecting to have a "typhoon day" tomorrow. Grocery stores in Quarry Bay have been cleared out of lots of basic needs. Surprisingly the only aisle hit really hard at the Park-n-Shop by my apartment in Central is the liquor aisle.

People do lots of interesting things with their typhoon days. Some people sleep in, some people have typhoon parties, there are T8 running clubs and surfing clubs. For our art based readers we thought of 5 artsy things you can do to celebrate Usagi.

1. Perfect your shadow puppet skills
Dark days like typhoon days make great days to work on your shadow puppets. Find a flashlight and some blank walls and get to work on your skills. Start with the rabbit in honor of the typhoon and then move onto more complicated ones. Here's some video of the Pilobolus Theatre to get you inspired.

2. Find classic musicals on YouTube and have a marathon.
There are tons of classic musicals available now in full on youtube. We found: Legally Blonde, Fiddler on the Roof, Hello Dolly, Funny Face and many others. Vedge out in front of the computer and practice your box square!

3. Feng Shui your apartment. (Or maybe just clean it...)
F
eng Shui is the Chinese philosophy of harmonizing the energy in your home. Use this extra time trapped in your casa to help your chi. Here's a great link for putting feng shui into small spaces. Tiny HK apartments are more difficult to feng shui than bigger places. But don't be afraid!

4. Catch up your knowledge of classic theatre.
Tons of royalty free scripts are available for free online. Use this time to become more versed in classic literature and theatre history. I had a professor tell me in college that one must read/see a play a week to be the best artist you can be. Read on! Knowledge is power.

5. Start working on your homemade Halloween costume.
We made this post last year that has been really popular. They're about cute homemade costumes you can make for your kids. Hot glue and cardboard are your friends. Halloween in just around the corner. Why not get started today? Fact- Homemade costumes are always superior.

Editor's Note: This article was written before Usagi landed, during the typhoon hype. Although we're all safely at home in our beds for now there is deep reason to suspect we'll all be back at work by the afternoon. Arg!

We didn't get our holiday but we should be grateful. RIP to those who were killed in Mainland by Usagi. Mother nature is no joke.
