5 Best Theatre Movies
30-1-15
These are movies that about the life in the theatre. They are not movie/musicals. This is a whole other category for us to tackle at a later date. There are tons of movies about the life treading the boards but these are some of our personal favorites. Some are based on true stories and some are just based on the crazy life we lead backstage.
Cradle Will Rock
Based on the true story of the FTP in Depression era America. It tells the story of the famous production of Cradle Will Rock. It was the last project funded by the Federal Theatre Project before it was shut down for promoting "socialist propaganda". Look for some inside theatre jokes with Revolt of the Beavers making an appearance in the movie, roller skates and all.
CAMP
Set in a drama camp in New England, it tells the story of kids and their passion for the stage. They explore the theatre in an intensive environment. The movie is based on the writer's past experience at the famous camp, Stagedoor Manor. (Where he was Robert Downey Jr.'s camp counselor.)
Stage Door
A classic film from the 30's about life backstage at the theatre. With great performances from Katharine Hepburn, Ginger Rogers and Lucille Ball it will make you wish you were a struggling actor in their days.
Hamlet 2
A failed actor turns to teaching drama for a living and decides to put on a sequel to Hamlet, in musical format. The end show is hilarious and sad at the same time. We've all had that theatre teacher that seems they were forced to be with you because their careers didn't pan out, this movie is an ode to them.
Mrs. Henderson Presents:
Mrs. Henderson buys an old theatre in London and turns it into the Windmill. She learns about the business of putting on a show from the professionals. She opens a historical theatre that was known for its burlesque revues. The movie has some beautiful costumes in it and explores the roles of women in the early days of theatre.
