Artist of the Month- August- Jeffrey Anello
This month's AOM is Jeffrey Anello of the band, The Anello. (In case you couldn't guess.) The Anello is one of Hong Kong's hottest bands. They were recently nominated as Best Local Band by the HKELD readers. They will also be having a release for their new EP later this month. No word on if he's accepting applications for groupies... But you could always ask, he and his bandmate are the nicest guys.
1. Name, Birthplace, Age
Jeffrey J. Anello, New York, USA, 31
2. How does where you were raised affect your work?
The opportunity of being raised in New York and then living in Hong Kong for 8+ years, has taught me the importantance of communicating. The ability to deliver a performance that connects with the audience makes it fun and a joy to go to work everyday.
3. Where did you train?
My training background and degree is in the performing arts while studying theatre and music in University. However, my training began at a young age singing tunes from a karaoke machine my Mother gave me on my 5th birthday.
4. What is your favorite style of music? Why?
My favourite style of music is rhythm and blues. From the 1940's, continuing into today's contemporary music, R&B is with out a doubt a style that when it happens you feel it!
5. What was the best performance you EVER saw?
The best performance I ever saw was LL Cool J. His ability to engage with the crowd, move with passion on stage and perform with such a high energy was inspiring. Seeing that made me realize the hard work it would take to do what you love each and everyday. The best performance ever is hard to define but it was deffinitly the most memorable.
6. What was the best performance in HK you EVER saw? (You cannot say your own.)
The best performance I ever saw in Hong Kong was James Blake LIVE at KITEC. The ability to perform musically, vocally and comfortably was an experience that left me appreciated the feeling that an audience can connect with the performer when the music is performed with technicality and emotion.
7.What piece of work are you the most proud of?
The piece of work I am most proud of, at this time, is the Next 2 Me EP by The Anello. The ability to write, create, and perform music with Michal Garcia has been an honour and I am happy to share our musical creations with our close fans and other music fans alike.
8. What is your process like?
The process to create a song starts with a groove. That groove turnes into melody with sound, lyrics and a passion. Producing the finished result that is heard by the masses takes time, planning, and execution to continue that initial passion into a piece of work that is complete.
9. What is your dream project?
My dream project is to continue pursuing the love of music with The Anello. It is a project that is designed to express ideas and aims to connect with their audiences on a cultural level while being abel to bring ideas of positivity and consciousness into greater visibility.
10. If you could change one thing about the art scene in HK, what would it be?
If I could change one thing about the art scene in Hong Kong it would be to convince all people that music should not only be considered a financial for-profit business. Go see a show, any show, and support the locally diverse talent in the wonderful city that is Hong Kong!
