Artist of the Month- May- Dakota Duclo
Arrived six months ago in Hong Kong, Dakota Duclo is certainly not wasting any minute of his time; in fact, the Texan actor will be seen in three different productions this month. He is part of All In The Timing with CSR Theatre, Love Pings by I AM (where he'll be touring in Singapore before performing in Hong Kong) and The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) by Aurora Theatre. Full of energy, talent and enthusiasm, Dakota tells us more about his theatrical approach and background. We are certainly looking forward to seeing Dakota's performances in all these various productions!
1. Name, Birthplace, age:
Dakota Christopher Duclo, Evansville, Indiana. 25 years old.
2. How does where you were raised affect your work?
It helps me to stand out. By attacking smaller areas where theatre and film are still prevalent, it's not a question of being good or skilled. It's only a question of being present.
3. Where did you train?
I received my Bachelor of Arts in Theater from Texas Tech University.
4. What is your favourite style of theatre? Why?
Probably realist theatre or stylised pieces, particularly in more intimate spaces such as labs, black boxes, and/or smaller three-quarter thrusts. I enjoy being close to the audience, and that style of theatre is a close parallel to the intimate style of film acting.
5. What was the best show you EVER saw?
To this day the best show I've seen performed on stage is probably 'Urine Town' which was performed at my university. A musical, which is what surprised me particularly about how much I enjoyed it. I saw it five times during its two-week run.
6. What was the best show in HK you EVER saw?
I've only seen 'The Crucible' since I've been here though I did enjoy it.
7. What piece of work are you the proudest?
Hard to say, though Macbeth was a highlight of my career. It's very often difficult to obtain those roles, but when you do it's very special. Regardless of how well the production turns out, I found it to be a blessing to have been offered that part. I'm not typically a Shakespeare fan, yet I am however a Macbeth fan.
8. What is your process like?
My process changes constantly. It can be very stressful in its inconsistency, yet I stand firm that there is not one way to do things. First and foremost I work to "learn" the lines, which is quite different from "memorising" the lines. Ideally, everything falls into place once you've learned your lines but occasionally you have to use outside resources in order to obtain your goal.
9. What is your dream project?
I don't know that I have one. I've been acting my whole life, but when the time is right I would very much like to switch to music...I'd probably be the Green Power Ranger though, just saying...
10. What do you think about the arts and theatre scene in Hong Kong?
So far, so good.
