Artist of the Month-November-Milk Tsang

Milk is the probably the most photographed artist in Hong Kong at the moment. The man behind the Umbrella Man statue at Occupy Central, he's a huge talent and is only 22 years old. He's destined to become one of Hong Kong's future stars. Get to know him below.

1. Name, Birthplace, Age

Milk Tsang / Hong Kong / 22 years old

2. How does where you were raised affect your work?

I was raised in Hong Kong. As it is an international city, I had the chance to get in touch with and inspired by the traditional culture of Japan. The special minimalist style of the city gave me insights on creations by mixing up modern art and design.

3. Where did you train?

I studied Film & Digital Art and graduated from HKSC Lee Shau Kee School of Creativity two years ago. It is a high school where creativity is highly encouraged.

4. What is your favorite style of art? Why?

I’m a huge fan of minimalism and impressionism because I'm not very used to creating art pieces with detailed concepts or ideas. The most important direction in my creation is the beauty and feelings I get while I create. I will try to make every work as succinct as I can.

5. What was the best show you EVER saw?

DV8 Physical Theatre "Can We Talk About This" from UK. I still cannot forget the scenarios and the only comment from me is “internationally recognised!”

6. What was the best show in HK you EVER saw? (You cannot say your own.)

Hotel New Tokyo at White Noise Records 10th Anniversary

7.What piece of work are you the most proud of? (please include photo, if possible)

I'm still learning and polishing my skills, so I don't have any work that I really like at the moment.

8. What is your process like?

I always get ideas where images and emotions emerge from my mind. I will jot them down and develop them.

9. What is your dream project?

My dream project is to put a small work right at the middle of a huge space while the audiences surround it and enjoy it. The audiences would then be free to interpret my work and comment on their own. It would just be for fun.

10. If you could change one thing about the art scene in HK, what would it be?

I hope the Hong Kong Government could put more resources to support local art projects, such as more funding, space and opportunities.
