Arts Management: Poster Design
3-6-13
Arts Management is a tough job that often goes under appreciated in HK. One of the big responsibilities of this is the poster design for the show. I've gone back through the past 8 months of the hkeld calendar and grabbed some of the poster designs off of it. Which ones do you like best? Why?
Have you ever bought tickets to a show because of the way their poster was designed ? What was so good about it that made you pull your wallet out?
Info that should ALWAYS be on your poster:
1) Show title.
2) Name of the playwright, name of the composer (if it's a musical). Their name should be 1/2 the font size of the title.
*(Most contracts for royalties have this written in.)
3) Name of the production company.
4) Dates of the run.
5) Ticket Prices.
6) Where the theatre is.
7) Where they can buy tickets.
8) Title Sponsors.
9) Any warnings for audience members, such as language or age restrictions.
Sometimes you will also have it written into contracts for directors/producers that their names must appear on all advertising. Please make note of this when designing your ads.
As a disclaimer, some of the ads we picked for this article were the digital ads for the productions and only had some of the plays' information, as they were accompanied with the facebook events. All the images in this article are the property of the artists who made them and were simply borrowed by hkeld to help educate fellow artists on the art of arts management.
We hope we've helped you learn a few tricks of the trade. If you have any questions about poster design and arts management, feel free to ask them below in the comment section!

Love the burn the floor one. I bought tickets because of that poster. It just made the show seem really exciting. And i love when they have quotes about the actual production.
