Coming Soon...The Affordable Art Fair
15-3-13
I had the privilege of being invited to the press preview of the Affordable Art Fair. A new venture into the art world that sets out to change people's minds that you don't have to be a "zillionaire" to buy art. Art lovers will be rejoicing as 18 local galleries are present and oodles more from around the globe. Whether you're a serious art collector or a first time buyer I think that the fair would be a great location for it. The galleries are friendly, the space is well set up and the prices are placed out in the open. There's no need to fear the gallery owners, they won't bite!
Of course, affordable is a subjective word. What I can afford is completely different than other people. The price range of the work is anywhere from 1,000HKD to 100,000HKD. There's various mediums of work from prints to sculptures to multi-media. On the evening of March 15th, there will be special performances by local performance artists. I highly doubt you will be able to purchase an actor. (Sorry to disappoint, but you could always ask...) Various workshops and lectures will also be happening during the course of the fair. Topics include an Intro to Collecting, Framing 101, and a Lecture on the Asian art market.
There's a great kids corner where kids can make arts and crafts while mom and dad peruse the art fair. I think this is a great addition to the fair and helps make the event more family friendly. Kids can easily get bored at art shows - so stick them in the craft corner and let them glitter something!
One section you should definitely check out is the Young Talent Hong Kong section. Curator Eric Leung has chosen 16 up and coming artists to have their work displayed.
The Affordable Art Fair is at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Center through Sunday. Check it out!
