Dresscodes?
24-1-13
Recently, I was having a discussion with my mother about working at the theatre. She says to me "It must be nice to work at a place where people come in dressed up for all your shows."
Dressed up? I remember someone wearing ripped jeans and Birkenstocks to my last show... I don't even see people dressed up at church anymore!
Some theatres still require a dress code. These are mainly operas, from my experience. Have you ever dressed up for a night at the theatre? Do you miss the dress requirements from the "olden days" where men had to be in coat and tie and ladies had to be in fancy dresses?
I think there is something really nice about getting dressed up for an event. It's a ritual behavior that I enjoy. (And I love any excuse for a fashion moment....)
Opinions wanted! Dress codes. Are they something we're missing out on or are they old fashioned?

It's nice but not practical at all. The first time I was in the MET in NY, I was in coat and tie, but the theatre was so hot that I feel faint enough to leave the theatre. At the Berlin Philharmonic, the hall was so warm that I was down to my undershirt. I do however like that people to dress neatly, tidily and appropriately... wear proper shoes (no slippers), wear pants (no shorts), wear shirt (no T-shirt)... for shows that deserve such respect :-)

People need to stop dressing like slobs everywhere they go. Sweat pants? thongs? without bras? ew. But we can't expect people to come to our shows in tuxes anymore. They won't come.
