Gift Ideas For Theatre People
10-12-14
Stuck on what to buy that magical theatre person in your life?
Well, you could just give us money... No, I'm not kidding. Most people theatre people are starving artists and some cash would really help us fund our next project or pay our gas bill. If money isn't exactly what you're thinking then here's some theatre themed gifts for that thespian in your life.
Table Top Theatres
They were all the rage in the early 1900's and they're coming back as kitsch items that Theatre people think are super cool. The Theatres are made of paper with actors and sets that work on a wing/groove system. They're a pretty cool decoration for any Theatre major's household. We found this one on Amazon but we've found others on Etsy.
Dress Form
For the costumer in your life, a dress form is a necessity and something that's actually a bit of a pricey investment. Finding a dress form that you can borrow in HK is a big pain in the you know what... So find a used one for cheap in Shenzhen or in Sham Shui Po and give it the dress maker in your life. We bet she'll be showering you in kisses and fabulous homemade Halloween costumes for years to come.
Plays, Plays, Plays
You could go classic and get the complete works of William Shakespeare. We found a pile of them at Dymocks at IFC. You could go for something witty and get the Oscar Wilde collection we saw. I know gift cards are bit impersonal but you could get one for Samuel French and your theatre junkie could go nuts buying plays or they could put your gift card towards rights and royalties for their next production.
Open Space
Rehearsal rooms are a pain in the butt to book in town. Got a big meeting room at your office? Got access to an empty room at your learning center after hours? Give it to your boyfriend or girlfriend to rehearse in for their next play. They'll love you forever. Nothing says true love like rehearsal space.
Character Shoes/Headshots
We need basic black shoes for almost every show we do. Character shoes are the best shoes to do a show in. They look fancy, they work in almost every period and they're easy to dance in. But they're not cheap. You can find out your partner's size and get 'em a pair. It's a great investment in their career that they'll appreciate. If shoes seem too difficult to buy, you could invest in your little actor's headshots for Christmas. A great headshot is pretty much priceless.
We also love tickets to see other shows. Want to know what's playing this month?
