Great Gay Literature You Should Know

  17-10-12

Pink Season is still raging on in Hong Kong celebrating the wonderful LGBTQIA community. Some people in the art community raised the issue that although they loved My Big, Gay, Italian Wedding it showed a somewhat stereotypical view of the gay lifestyle. They thought it wasn't the most meaningful piece of gay literature out there. And I think they raised a completely valid point. Gay Wedding was a fun filled evening but there are several other pieces of "gay theatre" that are amazing, thought provoking, and hopefully going to be produced in Hong Kong in the near future. Here are 5 great great influential pieces of "purple theatre" I think every member of the LGBTQIA community should read. Maybe Pink Season will produce one of them next year? We can only hope that they will be brave enough to tackle a serious piece of "gay literature" with some meat on its bones...

1) Bent
Martin Sherman, 1979
A relationship builds between two gay men in a concentration camp during WW2.

2) Angels in America parts 1&2
Tony Kushner, 1993
Fictional and historical characters explore sexual relationships, politics, religion, and AIDS in the Reagan era.
Pulitzer Prize for Drama in 1993.

3) Corpus Christi
Terrance McNally, 1998
A re-invention of the story of Jesus and Judas, where they are lovers and Judas ends up betraying Jesus because of a bad breakup. One of the most controversial plays in American theatre history. Still banned in the state of Texas. When the play was performed in Greece in 2012, a riot broke out due to the nature of the production and the play was cancelled.

4) Cabaret
Kander and Ebb, 1966
Based on the book and play by Christopher Isherwood. This classic musical protrays the lives of gay and straight cabaret performers in Germany before and during the Nazi takeover.

5) The Children's Hour
Lillian Hellman, 1934
A vindictive child destroys the lives of two women who run an all-girls school. Despite its critical success in 1934, it lost the Pulitzer due to the themes within the play. Many people believe it to be the best American play to be written in the 1930's. Later became a movie starring Audrey Hepburn.

Have to whole heartedly agree with this. Gay Wedding was a fun show but it was very one dimensional in it's acting and characters. As a lesbian, I didn't feel it was a fair protrayal of my people. Although it was funny there are better pieces of lesbian theatre. If Pink Season's mission is to promote a positive image of the gay lifestyle I'll hope they'll do more thought provoking plays in the future rather than cheap laughs and limp wrists. Gay people are so much more.

I read Satoshi's review and thought maybe he was being a little harsh of gay wedding. Then I saw it. It was a little flimsy material wise. Pink Season should step next year and back a piece of gay drama with a backbone rather than a play that was simply stereotype after stereotype.
