Hamilton Sweeps the Tony Awards! (Duh...)

  16-5-16

It comes as no surprise to theatre lovers that Hamilton swept the Tony nominations earlier this month. Hamilton walked away with 16 nominations including Best Musical, two nominations for Best Actor in a Musical and one for Best Actress in a Musical.

Nominations for the 2016 Tony Awards were announced Tuesday morning by previous award winners Nikki James and Andrew Rannells. Both won Tonys for their work in The Book of Mormon.

Hamilton creator Lin-Manuel Miranda won a Pulitzer Prize last month for his hit musical about Founding Father Alexander Hamilton. The musical also won a Grammy for Best Musical Theater Album. It is predicted to dominate the awards later this summer. But you never know... We all remember when Wicked lost for Best Musical, right?

The play also recently announced that tickets are sold out for the next year! The have encouraged fans not to price gouge each other but rather let everyone enjoy the musical. Lin-Manuel Miranda is passionate about making theatre accessible for all audiences and is in talks with the city of New York for a free performance in the park later this year. (Let's hope it works out!)
