Hong Kong's Best Bars for Parties
5-4-16
Artists are known for their ability to make beautiful things and throw one hell of a party. As theatre people we're often in need of spaces to throw these parties on a budget. (Hello... cast parties!) Here's 5 of our favorite places in Hong Kong that love and support the art scene, have great menus and more importantly are affordable for even the most starving of artists. (We even chose a place on the dark side!)
Orange Peel
Address: 2nd floor, Ho Lee Commercial Building, 38-44 D'Aguilar St, Central
Happy Hour: 7 to 9pm, Monday to Friday
Hong Kong's new favorite music lounge is owned by the amazing Joyce Peng of Joyce is not Here. They have the best music, poetry and movie nights during the week. They also continually make an effort to support the local art community. Drinks are always cheap with their happy hours lasting til 9 and offering drinks for as low as 50HKD.
Mano Cafe
Address: Ground Floor, THE L PLACE, 139 Queen’s Road, Central
Happy Hour: Monday to Friday 5-8pm, Weekends and Public holidays 10 to 7pm
Grab your friends and family and come chill out at Mano Cafe with just 25HKD for a glass of wine or prosecco as well as 10HKD beers. This is one of the happiest bars in Hong Kong with great staff and delicious food. They also have vegetarian, gluten-free and allergy friendly food options. As for the ladies, come and rejoice: the happy hour is best of all on Friday nights because you drink for free!
Lily & Bloom
Address: 6/F, LKF Tower, 33 Wyndham Street, Central, Hong Kong
Happy Hour: Every Monday to Friday from 5 to 8pm and Saturdays from 6 to 8pm
During their “Prohibition Hour”, Lily and Bloom will be bringing back the good ol’ days where a single coin could buy you a drink. Your first cocktail will only cost you 5HKD, with other cocktails being 2-for-1 from then on (2-for-1 house beers and wine are also included in the offer.) All guests also receive free fries. Who can resist free food? (not me!)
Dada
Address: 2/F, The Luxe Manor, 39 Kimberley Road, TST
Happy Hour: 2:30 to 9pm, Daily
For our dark side readers, there is Dada. Dada is an over-the-top, jazz lounge bar located at The Luxe Manor hotel on Kimberley Rd. Happy Hour is daily where all standard drinks and cocktails are 2-for-1. They also provide free nibbles. They're known for their chill behavior and great deals for large bookings. Give them a call if you're looking for a dark side hang out! (They have a great video projection system!)
Fatty Crab
Address: 11 Old Bailey Street, Central, Hong Kong
Happy Hour: Tuesday to Friday, 5 to 7pm
Fatty Crab serves delish Malaysian food and has a delicious happy hour, or as they call it, a “fatty hour”. The restaurant offers discounted drinks and snacks. Their speciality cocktails are delicious and they have beer for as cheap as 35HKD. This is perfect for the artist on the budget.
Soiree
Address: 19 Lower Elgin St., Soho, Hong Kong
Happy Hour: 6 to 9pm, Daily
Soirée is an intimate bar that is dimly-lit with plush sofas and Rococo style mirrors. Stocked with “Soirée Sensations” made with fruit and spirits, it’s a great place to go with your friends. Highly recommended if you have a heavy female cast. Go for the daiquiris which are the best in town, and during happy hour are only 55HKD. What’s more, drinks are free for ladies on Wednesday from 6PM-9PM!
