Lazy Sunday

  9-9-12

Today I had a lazy Sunday with friends celebrating a birthday at Top Deck and celebrating a new baby in Fo Tan.

We live in a wonderful city full of talented artists. But today (while I was working on my fifth cup of coffee), it dawned on me - we worry FAR too much in this town.

We live in a city that is built on success. Not only do we need to be capable - we need to be THE BEST at everything we do!

This drive to be the best was put into us by many sources: society, tiger mothers, teachers, coaches, etc.

I wondered if we would still have this drive if our society encouraged us to be ordinary rather than extraordinary?

Would I be happy creating work that no one saw, liked or revered as long as my mother had never put the idea of being a successful artist into my head? Would I even be an artist? Maybe I'd still work retail like I did in college or wait tab-- never mind -- I HATED waiting tables!!!

Success means a lot of things to different people. Success can be money, happiness, accolades, fame, being able to pay your bills on time...

My vision of success is being able to do what you love every day. I love working on this site and telling people about the arts in Hong Kong. So, I guess that means I am a success! Yea!

To my friends' new baby, welcome to Hong Kong. I hope you like it here as much as I do. I wish you all the success and happiness in the world! Don't drive your mommy too crazy. I would like to have her back on the acting scene some time in the future, when she's ready.

Thank you Meaghan ! Very touching.
Sundays are made for being lazy so we can be extraordinary the rest of the week ! Or maybe we can just be extraordinarily ordinary.
