Love, Love, Love
21-11-12
My sister got married this past weekend and I had a fabulous time relaxing by the pool, catching up with family and eating my weight in tacos. Weddings are one of those milestone moments one has in one's life. You must be insanely in love to attach yourself to one human being for the rest of your life. I wish my sister all the happiness in the world AND have used her wedding as a platform for a blog... (She totally predicted it!)
Here are 5 plays with weddings and love as a central theme in them that I think are fabulous. Everyone loves a good wedding. Thus, one should think everyone loves a play with a wedding in it!
1) The Wedding Singer
Yes, they made a musical out of Adam Sandler's hit comedy and I love it. The music is catchy. It's super eighties. The costumes are fun and you get to see a man pretend to be Boy George for two hours. It's just good fun.
2) The Wedding
One of the most known pieces of Polish drama; it talks about Polish culture and traditions when it comes to weddings. I'm especially fond of it because one of my brothers-in-law is from a Polish background. It was written in 1901 in Comedy of Manners style and still holds incredible relevance to today's culture when people from different monetary and class backgrounds marry one another.
3) Much Ado About Nothing
The wedding scene in this play is my favorite part of the play. I find it to be so sad when she gets jilted due to gossip and lies. Of course being one of Shakespeare's comedies it turns out alright in the end but I find that this play holds some of the most realistic business of his plays. How many couples do we know that have broken up due to people texting or talking smack behind each other's backs?
4) Standing on Ceremony
Standing on Ceremony is a hit comedy that was created to discuss the issue of gay marriage in America in a funny but serious way. Nominated for an Opie in 2011 and Best New Play in the Regional Theatre Awards. It makes you laugh but doesn't rely on stereotypes.
5) Funeral Wedding: The Alvin Play
The Alvin Play is THE play to perform right now in the US. It's got a wedding in it and yet has a supernatural feel to it that is all the rage with current audiences. It's super creepy and allows designers to really stretch their wings and create something avant garde. Nothing makes a wedding more fun than murder, right?
