12-1-18
The new year has brought us cool, crisp weather to begin with. The best way to keep us warm? Checking out hot shows!
Theatrelab HK and Dove Tales Theatre Company bring us something really unique this month, as they are presenting, after their public stage debut Urinetown, their latest production A Night In Broadway.
Two of Broadway’s finest actors, Chelsea Williams (Mamma Mia, In Transit) and George Psomas (Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific), will perform classic and modern Broadway hits accompanied by the former music director of Hong Kong Disneyland, Rony Fortich. It will feature performances of Broadway classics old and new including Oklahoma, Sound of Music, and West Side story to Hamilton, Mamma Mia, and Wicked.
Chelsea Williams’ most recent credits include Sophie, Mamma Mia (Broadway), Kathy, In Transit (Broadway), Betty, White Christmas (US National Tour). George Psomas’ most recent credits include Perchik, Fiddler on the Roof (Broadway), Ensemble, South Pacific (Original Broadway Revival Cast), and a solo performance in Carnegie Hall.
"Our performers have been dazzling audiences across America." co-director Nathan Koval said.
As well as Broadway talents, the show also features Hong Kong celebrities Corinna Chamberlain and Jordan Cheng. Corinna has been seen in numerous TVB appearances, as well as, among others, Motherdance Dance Company and The Voice of the Stars (2nd Runner-Up). Jordan has performed in over 50 productions worldwide and was nominated for Best Leading Actor in the 26th Hong Kong Drama Awards for his performance in Actors' Family Musical A Midsummer Night's Dream.
"Ever since coming out to Hong Kong and starting up Dove Tales, we (himself and co-founder Ben Margalith) have wanted to take risks and collaborate with as many talented performers as possible. I worked with Corinna and Jordan a few years ago in the musical Blue Bird of Happiness. More recently, Jordan was incredibly generous and came to help us out in our last musical, Urinetown. Hong Kong gives people the opportunity to make long-lasting connections. It is inspiring to see how helpful people want to be in the arts community. This year Dove Tales has been making some big moves so we thought we would try and mount this project as well. We assembled a team in NYC to put together this group, and we couldn’t be prouder of this collaboration."
Both local artists will be joining the Broadway actors on stage for a few songs. It is indeed inspiring and invigorating to see so much energy and effort to keep the local creative community so vibrant and stimulating.
"I think our local audiences are going to love this show! It is not every day that Broadway stars come to Hong Kong to perform. They will be singing all the hit songs that everyone loves as well as a few newer hits that people might not have heard of before. Not only that, but one particular focus of this project is to provide the youth of Hong Kong an opportunity to learn from the best in the businesses. Our performers will be leading a series of masterclasses and workshops for students aged 8-18, not only to learn and work with but also perform with the Broadway actors. We hope this will inspire them to follow their dreams of being performers."
Nathan and his team are certainly excited to combine Hong Kong’s most talented performers with our Broadway actors, as well as, as mentioned above, they'll be showcasing some of Hong Kong’s most talented young performers from our workshops.
Students participating in the workshop will receive a complimentary ticket to see the concert. Concession rates are $150 for a ticket.
We are looking forward to this show, and we are excited to see what else TheatreLab HK has in store for us.
"Along with our workshops, school drama show, and other collaborations with companies and organizations throughout Hong Kong, we have many things in store for this year. We have partnered with FReD (Hong Kong Forum for Responsible Drinking) to present a new campaign to help students learn about alcohol prevention. We will be touring an interactive drama show to all the schools in Hong Kong to help give them the tools to make the right choice when it comes to alcohol. We are also planning on producing another musical in the fall of 2018! Stay tuned for more info".
A Night In Broadway plays on January 31 and February 1 at Youth Square Theatre. Tickets are available on Urbtix. For more information, click here.
