Preview- Dark Night of the Soul- CSR Theatre

  24-10-16

CSR Theatre Company will host a Halloween-themed theatrical competition with four teams of artists from different backgrounds and disciplines. Newcomers to Hong Kong's independent theatre scene, CSR Theatre is looking forward to entertaining (as well as scaring) local audiences with their brand-new show Dark Night of the Soul. Not only a title to their brand-new performance, but also a theme to the artists to explore and create a proper Halloween concept using different artistic mediums.

Artistic director and performer, Christy Leigh Shapiro is excited about this project, and she can't wait to bring more productions to the local scene. CSR Theatre has already introduced their Halloween concept last year (an adaptation of three different short stories), as well as previous artistic work in Shanghai; they look forward to making it an annual event.

"We want to grow, create fun projects and bring the community together while helping local and foreign artists who are working hard to make things happen" Miss Shapiro stated. She feels strongly positive towards the local artistic scene as" Hong Kong theatre is thriving and it has been such an exploratory and fun process slowly getting to know everyone. We want to be active in this scene by bringing a mix of experimental and classic styles influenced by films and multimedia."Miss Shapiro stated. Christy is particularly keen on Halloween events, and she loves the fact that Hong Kong is so welcoming towards these type of ideas; she feels positive that people will engage in the show and be highly entertained.

Among the various artists who are contributing to "Dark Night of the Soul" there is a group of interior design students (Aurelia Giovanni, Kyra Kay, Vivek Vijayan, Hades Lui, Zelene Lee and Lucia Chui).  They are building an installation and will perform in the space. Dancer Nicholas Beckwith will be showing a series of frames with stretched cloth. There will also be a painter (Asia Cybele) who'll have a couple sparring in her section, as well as a VR filmmaker (Kris Wormwood) who has taken the topic of alien abduction to the next level in 360 vision.

"The audience will then be led through these rooms by our costumed and very spirited actor guides Mike Brooks, Barry O'Rourke and Tiff Chan. I have enjoyed working with all of these guys; each team was extremely dedicated and worked hard towards this project, despite every day's commitments and other daily tasks. When we filmed scenes for the virtual reality part everyone was wearing green zentai suits (so Kris could do green screen keying).  The actors were working late at night and had to witness all that fluffing about in what looks like skin tight elf-suits. As Nicholas will also be engaged in other projects in Macau, he offered to assemble his art piece there and will carry it by boat to be stored until the event. Bless his heart; that is commitment!"

Among her future projects, Christy is very keen on presenting a musical next. "We've got a few ideas and lots of talented musicians on board so we'll keep you posted on that. Watch this space!"
