Preview- Once On This Island Jr - Face Productions
17-1-19
This is a very exciting week for Face Productions, as the local company is starting its season right at the beginning of the new year with their brand new productions: Once On This Island Jr.
Through colourful song, dance and storytelling, this full-hearted musical tells the story of Ti Moune, a peasant girl who rescues and falls in love with Daniel, a wealthy boy from the other side of her island. When Daniel is returned to his people, the fantastical gods who rule the island guide Ti Moune on a quest that will test the strength of her love against the powerful forces of animosity, hatred and even death.
Director Candice Caalsen is excited to present her latest project that puts a lot of local youngsters on stage: "Teenagers have huge amounts of energy to give. The challenge for us is to funnel that energy creatively. We have exceptionally high expectations of our student performers both on stage and how they conduct themselves professionally. The further challenge, therefore, is to develop students rehearsal behaviour, discipline and professionalism without stifling their creative potential and willingness to take risks."
The creative team involves a lot of well-seasoned artists: Andrew Swift – Musical Director and Assistant Director (recently seen as Frank Abagnale in Catch Me If You Can), Claire Johnson – Choreographer, Kenix Ho – Costume Designer and Production Manager, Georgina Li – Costume designer and Set Designer , and Kary Lo - Stage Manager. The team looks forward to the opening of the play this week, and how Hong Kong audiences will react to the presentation of this material: "Face Productions aims to create productions locally and using local actors and our shows are not always obvious commercial successes, while international touring companies bring the blockbuster musicals to HK. OOTI is one of those and Hong Kong audiences, I hope, will appreciate watching something that departs slightly from what they are used to" Candice says.
The team has been working on this project since September, rehearsing once a week for 3 hours. "My favourite song is Pray because of its dramatic urgency. There are so many different emotions and desperations from all the different characters, which are handled very well by our performers."
We are looking forward to the opening night this Thursday and we wish Face Productions a wonderful success!
