Hong Kong Singers are on stage again this week after their latest show, Pageant, which took place last October. Like last time, the group is presenting another hilarious comedy that will keep everyone in the audience glued to their seats, as The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee is funny, engaging and utterly amusing. The lighthearted and spontaneous production offers plenty of opportunities for a laugh, and it indeed surpassed all of my expectations last night.
All of the well thought out, diverse characters in the show are played by talented actors. If you think that in Hong Kong we lack the talent to put on certain shows, please think again. Each character has their own story, for example; 'Olive' is there with a dictionary for a best friend, 'Mitch' is on his community service and- without spoiling the plot too much- there is also an unsuspecting love story. Each character brings a different style to the table, complimenting and feeding off each other well. Every single one of them is fully developed and execute every musical number beautifully. The actors' improv abilities are also tested in this performance as, at some point during the show, four volunteers are selected from the audience, and then they become a part of the show. The performers' skills were flawless as they adapted to different scenes.
A favourite part of the show for me was the impromptu big musical numbers that included scooters, swinging on ropes and cheesy choreography. Impossible to not enjoy whether you love musicals or not! Simple jokes, complicated jokes, innuendos. My face hurt by the end of the evening from continually smiling and laughing throughout. The song 'Unfortunate Erection' was a particular favourite song of mine from the show.
As I mentioned above, one doesn't need to be a musical fan to enjoy The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee; a highly engaging and entertaining performance like this will be appreciated and enjoyed by everyone who gets to be at the McAulay Studio this week. This is a definite must-see show, so make sure to head to the theatre this week!
The 25th Annual Putnam Spelling Bee runs this week until May 5 at Hong Kong Arts Centre, McAulay Studio, Wan Chai. For more information click here.
