Review-Amidst the Wind-CCDC

  16-12-14

Masters of the Hong Kong Contemporary Dance Scene and the art of quick-change, City Contemporary Dance Company (CCDC) presented an evening of excellence.

On the 13th of December, CCDC presented Amidst the Wind as the culminating event of its 35th Anniversary Celebration at the Kwai Tsing Theatre.

According to the Founder and Artistic Director Willy Tsao, Amidst the Wind is a selection of what they consider some of their ‘most memorable dance moments’ during the past ten years, showcasing 16 pieces choreographed by (among others) company founders Willy Tsao and Helen Lai as well as Hong Kong based choreographers Mui Cheuk-yin, Xing Liang, Sang Jija, Dominic Wong and Noel Pong.

For those who have been loyal CCDC fans, it was an exciting review of what they have come to love and appreciate over the years. More importantly, it was a great evening to highlight the diversity of Contemporary Dance as it exists today. For any young audience members who are just being introduced to dance or are interested in knowing more about the breadth of Contemporary Dance, this was an evening to see.

The best thing about the evening was the diversity of works, performed by a group of very talented dancers  able to embrace this wide array of styles seamlessly.  They presented pieces that were by turn abstract, emotional, comedic, narrative...  Some were ballet-styled, others tightly rendered jazz numbers well-fitted to the West End, yet others bridging the immense gap between Classical Chinese Dance and Contemporary Dance and a couple of 'short stories'.

To denote the beginning of each new piece, 6 large panels along the back opened to create a variety of tableaux and doorways to the next piece.  In addition, there was a head to toe costume transformation, often in mere moments.  Each time the performers stepped onto the stage as if they had been lounging backstage – a great testament to their professionalism.

Truly a great evening in review and a stirring window onto what is yet to come from this premiere local dance company!
