Review-Burlesque Night-Vixens Burlesque

Walking through Lan Kwai Fong, I arrived at my destination Varga Lounge and I remembered this was a place well known for its delicious array of cocktails. Through a small crowd of Thursday night post-work-loungers I made my way upstairs, a section of the bar I had never been to. There I was pleasantly surprised to be greeted by an intimate space comprised of comfortable couches and a delicate ambience of soft lamps and candle light.
My first thoughts were, lovely space – but this place can’t hold much of an audience. This was immediately followed by – how nice that I am about to be one of the lucky few.
I must admit, I have never been to a Burlesque Show and was not sure what to expect. But give me a setting like this and I am prepared to give anything a chance, especially scantily clad ladies!
Bring on the Burlesque!
Hosted by “Penny Poutine”, The Vixens were announced. Tonight we had performances by “Pussy Galore”, “Cici Frost”, “Scarlett Amaretto”, “Juicy Nana” and “Nixie Trixie”. Amusing names, presented by a very jovial host, the small crowd composed of a fair balance of men and women eagerly awaiting the dancers.
First up was “Penny Poutine” herself, performing a solo to “Hey Big Spender”. This lady is a natural performer. Not only is she humorous but her interactions with the audience soon had them eating out of the palm of her hand, long before she had removed any clothes.
Five to ten minutes we were given in between dances to get another drink or do whatever we needed to do, then we were back with an ensemble piece performed by “Cici”, “Pussy” and “Juicy Nana” to the track of “Putting on the Ritz”. It was natural to sympathize with these dancers as the cramped space upstairs gave them no real legroom. Nevertheless their enthusiasm for the performance and their ability to turn any mishap or disadvantageous situation into a positive saw them through.
Next was “Cici Frost” performing to Marilyn Monroe’s I Wanna Be Loved By You. Whereas the songs so far had been lively and the humourous elements the dancers added to them were suitable, this performance called for something a little more…serious. “Cici”, as it so happened, picked a very appropriate song. Her petite frame and sensitive aura suited the act and her smile is a real crowd-stunner.
The next performance brought us downstairs to the main bar. Five dancers performed to Fever. I must salute The Vixens at this point for their bravery; by taking the show into the main bar, they were now performing to a crowd that had not necessarily come or were prepared to see a show. But as one man in a business suit discovered as he walked through the door, whether you have come to see them or not, once you step on their turf The Vixens will have their way with you. The only difficulty in this type of venue is if you have come specifically for the dancing then the shifting from upstairs to downstairs is not that convenient and your experience of the performance may be greatly affected by how close a seat you can get to one of the dancers; take note those of you who do desire the closest thing you can get to a free lap dance this side of Wan Chai.
The final performance was also held in the main bar to Elvis’ Devil in Disguise. The three dancers dressed in hula outfits gave perhaps the best-choreographed and synchronised performance of the night.
Many of the performances tonight were spontaneous, relying on the charisma of the individual dancer. But, at times, there was choreography; the moves were kept relatively simple, which is completely understandable given the space they had to work with.
Given the colourful cocktail menu, given the relaxing setting and given that the show is free how can one not enjoy oneself when these girls perform? It is clear that all The Vixens are really enjoying themselves and that is the key to having a fun night out with them. They do not pretend to be the Hong Kong version of some Las Vegas Showgirls, they are just out to have a good time and invite you to join them; which is what I gather Burlesque is all about. All the girls were a delight as they were all dressed stunningly, leaving many a man there wondering where on earth do these women find such outfits.
Their next performance is their Christmas Show for which they are already selling tickets. All the money they raised tonight goes to their charity assisting Burmese children in need. If the ladies bring this kind of enthusiasm on a random Thursday night in October – you know they are going to bring it for their Christmas show come December. I look forward to them performing in a larger venue with a decent stage; I’d like to see what they can really do with some challenging choreography and a few more sexy numbers.
Thank you Vixens for the fun night.
Burlesque Night with The Vixens was a one night only performance. For more information on The Vixens you can visit their website.
