Review-The Dancer of Ultimate Bliss-4D Dynamics Dance Theatre

Another free show being done in Hong Kong at the JCCAC. Hooray for free showcases! The Dancer of Ultimate Bliss felt more like performance art than an actual dance performance. I think a lot of this had to do with the casual feeling of the venue. The show was a blending of human statues, music, provocative posing and the transformation of the environment in order to have an effect on the audience member. I'm not the biggest fan of performance art, in general. It always feels forced, but that's just a personal opinion.

The singers were very good. (Local group - HolicK) They sang various types of songs and chants without any backup. I like a good a capella choir. This one was very pleasant to listen to. The human statues were good enough - but it wasn't something I hadn't seen before. What I wish they had done was find a way for the statues' poses and the music to work together. Often times, it seemed very separate and it would have been a stronger piece if the two halves had worked together. You could see that some serious effort had been put into the design of the event. It was a visual art piece unto its self. What this show was missing was cohesiveness.

All and all, it's not a bad way to spend a rainy day in Shep Kip Mei. You can't beat the free ticket price and you'll get to hear some good singers. Kids would probably enjoy this show and cash strapped mommies looking for things to keep bored kids entertained over Christmas break would most definitely enjoy the free admission. If you've never seen a show at the JCCAC, I recommend this one because it's free. It'll also allow you to walk around and explore the space unlike a traditional theatre show.

The Dancer of Ultimate Bliss is playing at the JCCAC at various showtimes. Click here for more information. You can also find out more about the HKBD Cross-Media Cultural Festival here.
