Review-Through the Keyhole-Playtime Productions

Some of you may have not known that yesterday was Thanksgiving in America. It was all too fitting that I was invited to see Through the Keyhole. Through the Keyhole is a charity production benefiting Feeding Hong Kong. Feeding Hong Kong is a wonderful charity that helps deal with the hunger problem we have in town.
The show is a series of short plays by various playwrights. The cast is made up of Sarah Tracey, David Tobin, Jennie Davies, Francis O'Grady, Samuel J. Craig and Josie Mitchell. The acting in the show is good. My favorite scripts of the evening were Not Funny by Christopher Lockheardt and Brown Shoes by Julie Jensen. Brown Shoes was a delightful piece of Theatre of the Absurd that was really sold by spectacular acting from Jennie Davies and David Tobin. Not Funny was a really well written piece of theatre with short, snappy dialogue that threw you straight into the action. Sarah Tracey's performance in this play was what really sold the piece to the audience.
There were some genuine "WTF?" moments last night in the scripts. The script choices are a bit on the absurd side, especially the ones by Walter Wykes. The great thing about nights of short plays is that there is something for everyone. The overall feel of the show is very Grotowski. It's poor man's theatre at its best. Minimal lighting, minimal sets, props and solid acting from the cast.
Where the show can improve is in coordination with the scene changes. They seemed a bit chaotic at times with traffic jams happening in the wings. All of these kinks are standard opening night difficulties and I know they will improve over the run.
The entry to the show is a donation to the charity. You get a glass of nice wine from Red Willow with your donation. So pony up and see a good show with all the proceeds going to a wonderful charity! Now that Thanksgiving is over and we're in full holiday mode; it's time to give back. Through the Keyhole is a wonderful way to do something charitable with your weekend and still have a good time.
Through the Keyhole is playing through Saturday at the DEER Black box in Jordan. For more information, click here.
