The Hecklers, Roundup!

  5-9-13

We had such a great time on Tuesday night at the awards. Thanks to everyone who came out and celebrated with us. The venue was beautiful. Bisous is one of our favorite places in Hong Kong.

The food was delicious thanks to the hard work of the people at Bread Elements and The Stoep. We ate 5 pounds of bread before an intervention was held.

Our guests had some serious fun playing in the photo booth during the breaks and the pre-show. Here are some of our favorite shots! You can find digital versions of your photos by liking our facebook page.

Our Master of Ceremony Nick Milnes was a delight. We loved his cape.

Then the awards came. Here's some of our favorite shots of the ceremony. Do you have any great pics? Share them with us on Facebook!

Thanks again for all your love and support over the past year.
Let's work on making the next year of art in Hong Kong bigger and better.

What a night, what a moment.
I have to admit one thing: when Meaghan first told me last year she was going to create this website together with Tom, I had mixed feelings about their choice. Part of me felt excited about having a local theatre website run in English that could give the honest truth about local plays and promote them at the same time, but the other part of me felt reluctant. Did these guys know what they were about to go through? I know how passionate towards theatre both Tom and Meaghan are, but let's admit it: Hong Kong is a tough one, and despite being a big international city like Milan, London or New York, it doesn't offer the same range of arts and entertainment that the other cities in the world do (or maybe it does, but more accessible to locals than to foreigners). The local theatre community itself is a tough one, and very often hard to please. Since day one, Tom and Meaghan did not waste a minute, and they helped out local theatre, a tough business to be in, to come out in a better and bigger way, connecting people and groups, letting people know that actors, directors and theatre companies are out there, looking for more people to get involved and help out, like any other city in the world.
What we do is not easy: we go out there, we take this huge gamble using our money, our time (how many times did we say no to parties, group hikes, junk trips, barbeques and so on because of rehearsals?), our energies. We take risks and we will continue to do so, because we believe in what we do. Sometimes it has been good, sometimes ok, sometimes so so, yet we believed in what we were doing, and we went ahead, just like Meaghan and Tom did.
We put a lot of work, a lot of effort in The Last Days of Judas Iscariot (or in any other play for that matter)and, having been in HK for 7 years and involved in theatre for 6 in HK, I can say that a lot has happened in the last few years. Meaghan and Tom, and their HKELD, have no doubt helped the independent groups (and please let's call them independent)to grow and be known. It is a big achievement for the local theatre scene, because it shows that things can happen, and move ahead. And of course, it's a great achievement (or maybe recognition) for Aurora Theatre too! The other night I tried to say this, but tears and my emotional state did not allow to articulate what I wanted to express. A big, fat THANK YOU. To those who believed in us, to our cast and crew, to our audience, to those who find time to come and see our shows and also invite other people. To those who give us good constructive feedback and help us growing bigger and better. And of course, to Meaghan, Tom and their HKELD for making this happening. You guys are dreamers, just as we are at Aurora Theatre. Let's keep dreaming and growing- it's the only weapon we have.

I have forgotten to mention: Nick Milnes was the best! As good as Seth McFarlane at the Academy Awards :)
