Theatre Game of the Week #16

One of Aristotle's 6 principals of drama is rhythm. Here is a game that helps students play with the concept of rhythm. It works really well with primary school kids.

Name: Again and Again

Materials Needed: None

Students Needed: 10+

Time Needed: 10 minutes

While sitting on the floor or at their desks, students take turns making a two-beat sound with their body. Start off the first round by clapping your hands twice. The person to your right makes a sound of his/her choosing, then repeats the sound you made. The next person makes a new two-beat sound, then repeats the others. The creation and recollection of sounds continues around the room while keeping a steady beat. If a student forgets start over. Depending on the grade level, you may choose to limit how many sounds in a row should be made in each round. Go around the circle completely. Once everyone has made a sound in the circle the game is complete.

In the End: Students should be able to discuss rhythm and they have worked on a memory practicing exercise.
