Theatre Game of the Week #6
We've been doing a lot of physical games in the past few weeks. I thought I'd do one that is for vocals. A lot of local students have issues with speaking quietly when you ask them questions. Theatre games can be a great way to encourage speaking loudly and improve a student's public speaking skills. Name Game: Bean Bags
Items Needed: Bean bags or a sub item, signs/markers for points.
Students Needed: 5-10
Time Needed: 20+
This is a variation of the American classic game, Corn Hole. If you've never played it - you haven't lived. Use bean bags to illustrate the importance of voice projection to students. Have the students sit next to each other in a horizontal row. Walk 15 feet in front of the row and place a bean bag on the floor. Place the next one 25 feet away and the third one 45 feet away. Direct each child to take a turn stating his name and the name of his favorite food while looking at the first bean bag. Repeat the exercise while they each look at the second and the third bean bag. Children naturally raise their voices when speaking to objects placed farther away. When finished, tell them they just played a part to the second, fourth and seventh row of a theater audience. The next part is where you shout words and throw the bean bags into marked areas for points. Break the students into two teams. You can have them draw words to say out of a hat if you find your students are shy about coming up with words to say. The throwing action in Corn Hole actually naturally makes them speak louder. If anyone's diction or pronunciation is sloppy - don't give them points. Take away points for bad words used in the classroom.
In the End: Students should be able to speak loudly and clearly to people far away.
