Uni-Vision-October

  2-10-13

Editor's Note: We welcome a new article series written by our two interns, Karen and Gladys. Both are local students at universities in HK. They expressed a desire and need to know what upcoming shows are hot and offer discounts to students. Everyone knows Uni students love discounts. This series is a new feature on HKELD. Show our interns some love in the comment section. This was all their idea!

If you’re feeling bored with your regular university life, and looking for something different from your daily routine, we’ve got some recommendations on dramas and shows for the upcoming month which could spice up your life for sure.

Shakespeare’s plays are all must watch classics. Having a hard time to choose which to watch? The Complete works of William Shakespeare Abridged is the best choice for you, playing all 37 Shakespeare’s plays in 97 minutes. Arranged as a comedy, this will definitely be a new experience for Shakespeare lovers. The Today Show says, “If you like Shakespeare, you’ll love this show. If you hate Shakespeare, you’ll love this show.”

But this is recommended for those who has some background knowledge on Shakespeare, as it’s a high speed roller coaster type condensation of all of Shakespeare’s play, if you know nothing about Shakespeare you might find it a bit difficult to understand.

Proudly presented by ABA Productions and The Reduced Shakespeare Company, it will be available to watch from October 16th through 27th at 3pm and 7:45pm at the HKAPA, drama theatre. Not only there will be a student discount, there will also be a 10% discount if you purchase tickets to 2 or more ABA shows.

A regular Lord of the Rings movie marathon takes at least 6 hours. In One Man Lord of the Rings, 60 minutes is all Charlie Ross says he needs to get you through the whole story. Starring Ross as Frodo, Sam, Gandalf, Gollum, Legolas, and basically…well, everyone, the show blurb says to expect an energy-packed performance that will have you falling over your seat with laughter. Even Gandalf himself (Sir Ian McKellen) has given the thumbs up with this production: “If you liked Lord of the Rings, you’ll love Charlie Ross’ version!” Though tickets do come with a student discount, they’re still priced at 395HKD. We won’t recommend watching if you haven’t seen the movies or read the book, because while it’ll no doubt still be entertaining, chances are you won’t understand the jokes to begin with. If you’re part of the Dymocks Booklovers, there’s also an exclusive offer to meet the writer and performer Charles Ross after the show on October 2nd! The show plays October 1st-6th at the Drama theatre at the HKAPA.

If you’re familiar with Chinese literature, you’ll be no stranger to The Dream of The Red Chamber, one of China’s ‘four great classical novels’. From the 25th to 27th of October, the Hong Kong Ballet will be putting on this grand epic featuring star-crossed lovers set against the dramatic backdrop of the rise and decay of the Jia aristocracy. Hong Kong Ballet does Western classics such as The Nutcracker and Swan Lake quite often so it’ll be interesting to see how they tackle this traditional Chinese tale of love and tragedy. Students enjoy a 50% discount, so make the most of this opportunity to get close to the stage for once!

To start the month off (it opens this evening), especially if you think you’ve got a detective mind, we recommend Frozen, which is about the investigation of a lost 10-year old British girl. The play was first performed at Birmingham Repertory Theatre in 1998 and won the Best New Play Award from the Theatrical Management Association. It later won many other awards so, if awards are anything to go by, this should be definitely worth watching. It begins with monologues, each person showing his or her side of the story and you can see how each person’s story intertwines as they connect with one another. Talkin' Broadway comments it as “a powerful drama, about three people living the human condition, a story that needs to continue to be told.”

Presented by Stylus Productions from October 2nd through 5th at 8pm in HKAC’s McAulay Studio, tickets are available from Urbtix priced at 200HKD with additional student discounts offered.

If you're like us, you'll want to invite your family and friends to these shows with you. Theatre is meant to be enjoyed with those you love.

But maybe you don't want to commit to buying tickets without knowing just how good the shows really are.  In which case, like us, you'll want to look out for the HKELD reviews for Frozen and Dream, which go up the day after each show opens.  And for shows HKELD isn't reviewing, like Shakespeare and the Ring, there's HKELD's 'audience reaction' pages to check out - which maybe you can contribute to them, once you've seen the shows for yourself!
