What is Quilling?

  30-7-15

Quilling or paper filigree is an art form that involves the use of strips of paper that are rolled, shaped, and glued together to create decorative designs.

The paper is rolled, looped, curled, twisted and otherwise manipulated to create shapes which make up designs to decorate greetings cards, pictures, boxes, eggs, and to make models, jewelry, mobiles etc. Quilling starts with rolling a strip of paper into a coil and then pinching the coil into shapes that can be glued together. There are advanced techniques and different sized paper that are used to create abstract art, and quilled flowers among many things.

It’s an art technique that started during the Italian Renaissance by monks and has recently had a resurgence during the eco-friendly art movement. Quilling uses small strips of paper, making it a great way to use scraps left behind from other projects and turning them into beautiful works of art.

One of the most well-known quilling artists is Russian artist, Yulia Brodskaya.

Born in Russia, she lived there for a majority of her young childhood. Yulia moved to the UK in her teen years and became obsessed with fairy tale culture. She came from a disadvantaged background and used the quilling method to create her works, as it was something she could afford. She prefers to use the term “paragraphics” for her work, as she likes to think she is telling a story with paper coils rather than with words.

“Art is universal. And girls are the same everywhere. We dream of fairies, love and beautiful things. I hope my art can reach the universal girl.”- Yulia Brodskaya
