What Was Your First?

What was your first time in the theatre?

I was asked this the other day by a kid. My first theatrical experience came from a school tour of Pinocchio that was at a friend's elementary school. I was invited along by her mom to see it. It was done with traditional Italian marionettes. And to be honest it was pretty damn creepy. I can't tell you whether the script was very good or whether the acting was great but I can remember a lot of details about the masks and costumes on the puppets.

They had the traditional Commedia patchwork outfits on. I remember the Bruno puppet had the red Capitano mask on it which was really scary to a four year old. I also remember that it used the traditional slapstick. The whale moment in the play was really good from a production stand point. I remember the puppets were inside a skeleton of the whale that lit up from the inside. Looking back on it, the ideas they presented to us were quite advanced.

I also remember I was wearing a really nice dress and had to sit on the cafetorium floor. (Because cafetoriums are a thing in America.) It's funny the details about things you remember. This was obviously a very pivotal moment for me as kid but I remember that it was a generally disturbing experience.

Completely different than my first time in a Broadway theatre but that is another story...
