Where to Buy Costumes?
23-10-15
Halloween is coming soon and you might be in a desperate panic due to procrastination. Where to buy a costume in this town? No need to fear, HKELD is here! We're going to give 5 places that are sure to have something for you. Warning- you're in the 3 day period where haggling is not really possible in the markets due to crowds and demands. If you want to haggle over prices - buy your costume earlier next time.
1. Pottinger Street Market, Central
The go to place for all things costume for westerners. They carry a multitude of costumes in various sizes and are conveniently located by LKF so you can buy something quickly on the way to a party. There are even custom shoe and wig makers on this street so if you come with enough time you can have something made that is truly stunnning. Haggling is possible as long as you're not buying in the three day rush before halloween.
2. Ladies Market- Mong Kok
Vintage shops, slutty lingerie and costumes galore! You can get some of the same stuff as Pottinger St. but cheaper. They often times don't have the bigger sizes- but if you're an Asian sized person I recommend you hit the Ladies market first. It's also my prefered spot for wigs and accessories as they are cheaper here. Kids costumes are also a plenty here. You can find multitudes of 60's and 70's fashion and ugly Christmas jumpers in the vintage shops if you're in need for something else for a fancy dress party that has a specific theme.
3. Showtime Lingerie
For girls going with the "Mean Girls" philosophy to Halloween. (Lingerie + animals ears= costume.) I recommend Showtime as they have sizes for big and small girls, a multitude of things to pick from. They have niche costumes and staple pieces you could re-use. The shop is run by very helpful people who aren't going to sell you something just to make a sale. They sell you something that makes you look your best. I've actually seen them refuse to sell something to someone because it made them look fat. That's the kind of shop I will give repeat business to.
4. Sham Shui Po Fabric Market
If you're just looking for fabric for a greek goddess thing or feathers for a flapper, save a lot of money and come to Sham Shui Po. This market is mainly for fashion industry but sells the samples at super cheap prices. You can find basics like boas, sequins and fabrics for 1/2 the price you'll find them elsewhere in town.
5. Flower Market- Prince Edward
A crafter's heaven in Hong Kong. If you're making a homemade costume, this is where you want to go. You can find all the craft supplies you need in one area of town. Silk flowers and ribbons are closer to the Mong Kok East section. Your paints and glitters are going to be closer to Prince Edward side but all are within a ten block radius. You can also buy authentic Hong Kong school uniforms here from the factory shops. (Which is something you need to know in case you're planning to do Go Go from Kill Bill, or something else of the naughty school girl variety...)
