After the sold-out original run in 2012, the Shadow Players is excited to bring back Molière’s hilarious Les Femmes Savantes (The Learned Ladies) to Hong Kong, after the revived production’s tour in Australia in collaboration with the European Union Centre for Global Affairs.

To be performed between 29th June and 1st July 2017 at the Hong Kong Fringe Club’s Underground Theatre, The Learned Ladies of Mid-Levels centres on the ladies of a Mid-levels household, who seems to be unable to distinguish intellectual snobbery from true
learning, and fall under the spell of the pompous and affected intellectual fraud C.Y. Tang.

Against her husband’s wishes, the mother of the house desires her youngest daughter, Henriette, to marry C.Y. Tang. But Henriette’s heart is set on Sebastian, a man of practical
learning. Will the mother ever see C.Y. Tang for who he truly is? Will Henriette be allowed to marry her Sebastian? Will these learned ladies of the Mid-levels ever learn what real learning is?

This translation of Les Femmes Savantes is written entirely in witty rhyming couplets and also in catchy iambic pentameter, and was extensively edited and adapted by the Shadow
Players to bring it from 17th century France to contemporary Hong Kong. A satire on academic pretension, female education and precociousness, Ladies was one of Molière’s most popular comedies.

This revival of Shadow Players’ inaugural production was commissioned by the European Union Centre for Global Affairs and was further refined and improved from the original run.

The cast and crew had the opportunity to bring this production to various schools and venues in Australia to promote cultural exchange between Europe, Asia, and Australia, and performed to full houses at every show.
