In Set in Cape Town, South Africa, in 1773, "Mooi Annie" tells the story of Wolraad Woltemade, a historic South African hero who sacrificed his own life to rescue the drowning passengers of a ship that sank in the Cape Town harbour. The myth says that Woltemade saw what was happening from the beach and spurred his horse into the water. They swam to the sinking wreckage where the victims would hold onto the horse and then be returned to safety. On his horse, he went into the water four times, but on the fifth, the panicked passengers dragged the exhausted Woltemade and his horse down into the water in their attempt to rescue themselves.
In town lived a young, Dutch seamstress called Mimi. She was in love with Woltemade and was waiting for him to propose to her on the night of the accident. “Mooi Annie” focuses on Mimi and her impatience with her future husband.
In Afrikaans. The show will re-run in November in English.
