HONG KONG - Award-winning Hong Kong Shax Theatre Group (HKSTG) proudly presents a cutting-edge rendition of one of the most renowned and adapted Shakespearean pieces, Macbeth. Featuring a cast of over 30, and a backstage and crew team of over 20, HKSTG’s Macbeth will retain the evergreen Shakespearean language and themes, delivering them with a dosage of fast-paced combat and post-apocalyptic dystopian elements.

 

Macbeth, although being the Bard’s shortest tragedy, paints a bloody exploration of ambition, embroidered with emotional turmoil, mental disorder, stains of immorality and the upending of the natural order. The eponymous Macbeth, Thane of Glamis, upon being proclaimed the future King of Scotland by three androgynous witches, begins to harbor ambitions of power. Goaded by his wife, Lady Macbeth, Macbeth murders King Duncan in his sleep and seizes the throne as the deceased king’s sons, Malcolm and Donalbain, flee to avoid a similar fate. Thus unravels a power struggle hallmarked with murder, confusion, insanity and dark magic.

 

As HKSTG’s tenth production in eight years, Macbeth follows in the outstanding success of The Two Gentlemen of Verona (2016) and Love’s Labour’s Lost (2017), both of which featured sold-out shows and were the recipients of numerous Hecklers awards.
