The Emperor, his Mom, a Eunuch and a Man follows the life of An Dehai (a famous predecessor of the final grand eunuch of all, Li Lianying). An, who was Empress Dowager Cixi’s trusted aide, was known far and wide for his overarching power, corruption and meddling in political affairs. Once he stole out of the Forbidden City, claiming he was en route to “order a new imperial robe,” but was arrested by the Shandong Governor General Ding Baozhen and sentenced to death. Although Empress Dowager was determined to save her favourite eunuch, she was powerless.Although the story centres on An Dehai, it examines the lives and relationships among Empress Dowager Cixi, Emperor Tongzhi, Empress Cian, Prince Gong and Ding Baozhen. So often, historical stories cast thought-provoking allegories on our own times.
