Set in the male enclave of 1950s Oxford, the relationship between Lewis and Davidman begins as an exchange of literary correspondence. When the assertive and straight-talking Joy arrives in Oxford she delights and refreshes Lewis, while perturbing and appalling many of his fellow Oxford academics, and from tentative, timid beginnings their friendship blossoms into an abiding love which becomes brutally heightened by Joy's terminal illness.
