Review-Tales of Invisible Silk-Chinese International School14-6-14
Tales of Invisible Silk, performed by Bonsai Cacti, an experimental theatre group formed by the Chinese International School, is a colourful pastiche of stories, saddling ideas of culture and travel as its key themes. The show, about two hours long, consists of two original plays: The Reliable Adventures of Marco and Polo in the first half, and The Golden Peaches of Samarkand in the second. Both plays try to bring together notions of east and west, past and future, and each does this beautifully with anachronisms, witty cultural references from contemporary culture and highly stylised historical references.
Review-Butterfly Lovers-Hong Kong Dance Company14-6-14
I had seen Yang Yuntao’s work with the Hong Kong Dance Company when he choreographed Smiling, Proud Wanderer in 2006 and Border Town in 2007, and they had both been performances that made a lasting impression on me, not only with how well the skillfulness of the dancers came across in the pieces, but also with the dance moves’ powerful abilities to tell a great story. This time, he works with HKDC again to put on The Butterfly Lovers as director and choreographer. The Butterfly Lovers features not only the piece of its namesake but also the other three stories that, together, have been known as the four great myths/love stories in Chinese literature.

At one point during The Loneliest Whale, director and actor Victoria Allington tells her co-actor Tiff Chan to “look happier” for a photo she wanted to share online, to show everyone how happy they are. They take a selfie, shouting “happy, happy, happy!”
