Review-Somewhere West-KG515-5-13
This afternoon the students of KG5 were kind enough to invite me to their production of Somewhere West. It was an original piece devised and directed by the students. I was impressed to hear that they had only been working on it since Easter.
Review-Our Country's Good-Faust International11-5-13
‘The last word, gentlemen, will be the play’ – so says Captain Arthur Phillip R.N., aka Governor-in-Chief New South Wales, at the turning point of the narrative, when he approves the production of Farquhar’s ‘The Recruiting Officer’ by a clutch of convicts to entertain the troops and other citizens of the newly established penal colony under the direction of his second lieutenant (Royal Marines) Ralph Clark.
Review-Chastity Belt-Fringe Club3-5-13
Chastity Belt is a one-woman show by the well-known London-based comedian Peta Lily, who arrived on stage in a bright red tutu. She cut up a lemon, put it on her crotch and proclaimed that she was starting a new life of chastity. “Don’t be a sourpuss,” she cried.
Review-Glorious!-Sweet & Sour Productions2-5-13
Sweet and Sour Productions’ Glorious! is just that. It’s sweet and charming; the perfect show to bring your family to. The content is perfectly child appropriate and is well suggested for any budding performers or musicians in Hong Kong. Glorious! tells the story of Florence Foster Jenkins, a real life opera singer and socialite from NYC who became infamous for being the “worst singer in the world”. She rose to “fame” by becoming a patron of the Verdi Club and gaining the support of several famous singers in her day, even Cole Porter.
Review-Liars' League-East & West30-4-13
Yet again, fans trekked to Les Boules in Shek Tong Tsui to hear new untold tales for the first time. Seats were plenty and yet somehow it wasn’t enough. People were standing around near the sides and back and even leaning over the stairs to watch and listen with their enthusiasm whetted by the complimentary sangria and nibbles. The setting was informal and the actors, audience, even writers socialized, and had a good time - but once the reading started, there was absorbed silence except for amused giggles and gasps at appropriate moments.

Review-Taboo-City of Dreams27-4-13
This weekend HKELD was invited to see the re-run of Taboo. Taboo is a cabaret from the same team that brought us The House of Dancing Water. It's tag line is "a show of secret fantasies". Two critics attended, one male and one female. Since Taboo is all about the naughty and the sensual we thought it best to split the review from a male and a female perspective. Please enjoy!
Review-The Learned Ladies of Midlevels-Shadow Players25-4-13
I’d heard plenty about Hong Kong’s newest theatre troupe, The Shadow Players. Comprised of recent graduates from local universities, these young students felt that there was a niche for a new troupe with their talents so they got together and formed one. An inspiring story and who doesn’t love new rising talent?
Review-ELDORADO(HK)!- Not So Loud22-4-13
On Saturday afternoon I went to a play reading presented by Not So Loud Theatre company of 2 new one act plays written from the Chinese perspective. Wolf in the House by Simon Wu was about 2 men being trapped in an apartment during a T8 during the Hungry Ghost Festival. Rosaline Ting's Journeys was about two Chinese mothers who journey back to their motherland to discover who they are.
Review-Dirty Dancing-Lunchbox Productions21-4-13
Dirty Dancing holds a special place in my heart as a film. It's the first movie that I ever saw with an abortion in it. Some people are obsessed with this movie. They know all the lines, they memorize the choreography, they know all the words to the music. I saw people at the show last night carrying watermelons and wearing 60's clothes in homage to the piece. The audience was ready to see the show and have a great time!
