And why is this site called HKELD?
Nominees- Best Show (Musical)29-7-14
Have you ever wished you could burst into song at random? Characters in musicals have all the fun...
Nominees- Best Show (Non-Musical)28-7-14
The public voted for the best shows of the year and these were their results. It's amazing how wonderful all these productions are and yet so different. We have comedies, tragedies, theatre of the absurd and serious character studies nominated. Over the next few weeks we will be writing articles about all the nominees for The Hecklers.
City 2 City: TP 2 HK26-7-14
Last month I paid a visit to Taipei after having not been there for a decade. In terms of cityscape, not much has changed since ten years ago, but I was happily surprised and impressed by the city’s number of established heritage-turned-cultural hubs. With Hong Kong’s newly opened PMQ being the talk of the town this summer, especially since the arrival of Paulo Grangeon’s 1600 papier-mâché pandas, I thought it would be interesting to do a comparison of the two city’s arts and culture scene. My stay in Taipei was short, so this article does not attempt an in depth evaluation, rather it is a personal observation I have gathered from my travels.
Confessions of a Hong Kong Artist23-7-14
Last week we put up a post about our "Confessions of a Hong Kong Artist" series. We put up a page on our tumblr account where artists could confess their sins anonymously. We were overwhelmed with the amount of entries we received. We had planned on making this a monthly series but based on what we received last week, it looks like these confessions will become a weekly post on HKELD.
6 Mistakes Every Young Artist Makes22-7-14
There comes a time in everyone’s careers when they need to stop doing work for others for free. If you consider yourself a professional, you’re going to have to make a step and only accept paid work as an artist. (This can be hard, as paid gigs can be few and far between.) Here’s the thing: if you undervalue your talents, so will others. That doesn’t mean you need to be making a million dollars in a Broadway production… but it does mean taking a careful look at what kind of gigs you do and what kind of people you work with.
Still Need Your Ballot?21-7-14
Our server was a bit overwhelmed over the weekend with the vast number of ballots that were requested for The Hecklers this year. If you have requested a ballot and have not received it within 24 hours, please request another one. We've had several instances where the emails have bounced because the person appears to have misspelled their email address.
And the Nominees Are...17-7-14
The public has voted and chosen the best of the best for the 2013-2014 season! Don't shoot the messenger. We were overwhelmed by the enthusiasm and turnout for this year's ceremony. Each category has 5 nominees based on the highest number of votes. The nominees appear on the ballot in random order. We had ties in 3 categories this year, so we have 6 nominees in Best Supporting Actor, Best Designer and Best Standup Comedian. This year has turned out to be a very interesting ballot. We've had 40 different productions nominated, in 3 different languages, with 9 different styles of performance and over a dozen different nationalities represented in the acting categories. This year's Hecklers is a perfect representation of the beautiful melting pot that is Hong Kong's art scene.
Confessions of a Hong Kong Artist16-7-14
Inspired by Whisper, we've created Confessions of a Hong Kong Artist. Tell us your anonymous confessions! We'll create a montage of the best ones monthly.
Super Saver Saturday 2: Smart Mama- Smart Concepts12-7-14
We had the pleasure of having a copy of the Smart Mama book delivered to the HKELD team a couple weeks ago. The people at Smart Concepts must know that the HKELD reader is always looking to save a dollar and loves a discount. It's quite an interesting concept for a book. It's essentially a very high-end coupon book. I'm a big fan of coupons, I grew up clipping them in the States and was a bit bummed to find out they don't have the practice in HK. Who doesn't love saving 75 cents on a bottle of laundry detergent? With this book you purchase it for 788HKD and it provides you with over 250,000HKD in savings from 300 various retailers. These retailers are anything from food and drink providers, to photographers, to spas and beauty salons and many other service providers.
The Graffreaky Show-Samee Sam and Voxfire Gallery11-7-14
The minute I walked into Voxfire Gallery last night I was overwhelmed by the sheer number of people that street artist, Samee Sam, had drawn to the gallery on his opening night. I’ve been to Voxfire several times and never before have I seen a crowd so large, so eclectic and so hip. The Gaffreaky Show was an evening of street art culture with live DJs, graffiti inspired paintings on the walls, video projections and great debate amongst its attendees about what is art. (Although most of the debates were happening in French… And my Francais est tres terrible, so I only caught onto about one fourth of what they were saying.) I was looking forward to seeing some B-Boys, as break dancing and street art go hand in hand, but it would have been absolutely impossible to bust a move in the gallery last night without busting a bystander in the nose.
