Preview-Don Yuan-Aurora Theatre29-5-14
Don Juan has been a popular story for centuries and has been adapted many, many times. And of course, everyone has met someone like Don Juan, or at least someone who would like to be like him. So, the play is drawing on something everyone knows. Our version is meant to be light -- it's primarily a comedy; plus it draws on a lot of local material. I expect audiences will go away thinking "I know someone exactly like Don Yuan."- Peter Gordon
City 2 City: SG 2 HK26-5-14
Last week I took a trip to Singapore with a few artistically inclined friends to check out their Shakespeare in the Park and the local art scene. I had the pleasure of talking with local artists and taking some time to observe their museums, art galleries and theatre scene. Singapore and Hong Kong's cultural scenes are often compared against each other: they are both former colonies, they both use English as a national language, they both have large Chinese populations, they're both territories with dense urban areas... but that's where the similarities stop. I discovered some key differences between Singapore and Hong Kong's cultural scenes that we should take note of.

Preview-Footloose-Face Productions14-5-14
Hot off of last year’s smash hit, Hairspray, Face Productions is back with another high-octane, fun filled musical that’s out to please the whole family. Footloose, the musical, is a stage adaptation of the 80’s classic film starring Kevin Bacon. The story follows a teenage boy called Ren from Chicago who moves to Bomont, Georgia, with his mother, only to find the religious town prohibits dancing. The boy finds romance with the town pastor’s daughter Ariel and together the couple challenge the town’s small-mindedness in the hope of a rock’n’roll themed prom night. Ren comes swinging into town to prove that if you “Kick Off Your Sunday Shoes” and “Cut Loose” everything will be a-ok.

Our final category is always fun and this year we decided we would leave it up the readers of HKELD to decide what it is. Here's the categories you can pick from:

Dance is alive and well in Hong Kong, judging by the 16th Hong Kong Dance Awards evening held on 25 April at Kwai Tsing Theatre. The categories for the awards, and the performances during the evening showed not only the diversity of dance genres that are flourishing in Hong Kong, but also the passion and drive of local dance practitioners.
