Arts in the Park 201217-11-12

Today HKELD went to go check out YAF's Arts in the Park. What fun we had enjoying the free arts and crafts, free performances and joyous atmosphere! If you have kids and they are always saying "MOM!!!! I'm BO~RED!" then this is an event you want to take them to. It's 1) free 2) family friendly 3) has balloon animals.

The New HKPO Logo 16-11-12

Part of HKELD's mission is to talk about what's happening in the arts in Hong Kong now in real time. Last month I was invited to join a "protest" against the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra to rally against... their new logo. Now, I have been to one HKPO event in my time in HK. My classical musician family members positively groan at my lack of sophistication when it comes to music. I'm by no means an expert on the HKPO or on company branding. But I'm intrigued that a logo has gotten our art community so riled up they're "protesting" it. I've never heard of people protesting a logo change before. Talk about getting heckled!

Japanese Theatre for Dummies13-11-12

I have a serious love for Japanese Theatre. When I did my backpacking trip through Japan two summers ago I took a lot of time to dedicate to the theatre history of Japan. Like most other countries you can break down traditional Japanese Theatre into a few categories and then expand upon those in order to understand the experiences well.

If Thespians were Dim Sum...10-11-12

I've been wanting to do this article for a while. The analogy of theatre artists to Dim Sum. Dim Sum is a communal experience much like our art form. So I feel it is perfectly ridiculous and awesome to compare the two to each other.

How To Be an Artist and NOT Live in a Cardboard Box...9-11-12

There are some majors that you can pick in college that come with a free cardboard box for you to live in after you graduate. These are known as the "useless" majors that free spirited minds get for the love and not for silly things like money or food. There was a recent article in the Huffington Post where they talked about the 5 least paying college majors in 2012

Korean Theatre for Dummies6-11-12

Korean Theatre is very vibrant today: being one of the largest musical markets and the country that brings us some of the delightful Kpop bands that are at their truest hearts theatrical machines. Korea is one of the countries that I have studied over the past few years mainly due to my sisterhood with Juno Kim. Juno is author and resident artist at www.runawayjuno.com and she has taught me a lot about the Korean spirit and Korean history in general. We also share a love for theatre, so she and I spent some time in Seoul checking out the theatrical scene in Seoul.

Launch Pad31-10-12

On Monday night we had an awesome launch party for HKELD. We know we were a bit late as we actually launched about six weeks ago but we were really busy reviewing your fabulous shows and getting the site up and running. Thanks to everyone who came! A very special thanks to Sandra at Sweet Secrets for the yummy carrot cake cupcakes. They were delicious!

5 Audience Faux Pas24-10-12

Recently I went and saw Beyond Time at the New Visions Art Festival. I unfortunately was seated near an iPhone-aholic. You know that guy? The one who checks his stupid phone every 20 minutes in the show and doesn't care that the light off the screen ruins the performance for those around them. Yeah.... that guy.

Great Gay Literature You Should Know17-10-12

Pink Season is still raging on in Hong Kong celebrating the wonderful LGBTQIA community. Some people in the art community raised the issue that although they loved My Big, Gay, Italian Wedding it showed a somewhat stereotypical view of the gay lifestyle.

Intern Horror Story #111-10-12

We have an awesome intern on staff at HKELD named Steven. We have been torturing him the past couple weeks having him send lots of emails, doing a lot of "busy work" that needs to get done. That is the pain of being an intern. They go by many names. Slave, coffee bitch, hey you, copy boy, mail room clerk, production assistant, but most commonly they are called intern. I love our little Steven, he doesn't ask for much, he's small and quiet.
