Review-Le Diner de Cons-HK Theatre Association2-12-12

Bonjour.

Review-Tuesdays with Morrie-Chung Ying Theatre1-12-12

I’m a great believer in mulling over the Meaning of Life. A year ago, I fronted up a Hong Kong Philosophy Café evening portentously titled ‘The Meaning of Life – a must have?’ I regularly exhort those who seem interested to write theirs out for themselves. So who better to review a play which describes itself in the opening speeches as discussing exactly that?

Review-When Rick Met Marsha-Rick Lau30-11-12

Rick Lau, one half of When Rick Met Marsha, was quick to tell us to spread word of the show to friends and family if we enjoyed ourselves. Unfortunately, he laughed, they wouldn’t be able to get hold of any more tickets. The cabaret show at the Fringe Club was all sold out before their opening night.

Review-Beauty and the Beast-Chunky Onion26-11-12

I was already a fan of Grappa’s Cellar as a venue, but when I arrived on a Sunday afternoon to discover a buffet of free pizza to go with the show, I became an even bigger fan. It seemed I was not the only one. The kids also seemed to love it. The only thing I would suggest to those who want to put on a family show at Grappa's is to arrange for more family appropriate music instead of their usual club/pop music.

Review-Plateau Bluebells-Hong Kong Dance Company24-11-12

My expectations for Plateau Bluebells were set high. HK Dance Company is my favorite dance company in town. Over the years they have created some of my favorite pieces. I have come to expect great pieces of modern Chinese dance that fuse traditional Chinese folk dance with modern dance. Plateau Bluebells is based on a Shaanbei legend by the same name. The company was kind enough to provide a short version of it in the program to help us understand the story. Many people in the audience knew the story and the characters before they came. This was my first time with this story.

Review-Bellydance Evolution-Desert Mermaids23-11-12

I have not ventured out to “Chai Wan” many times before, much to my loss; for the “Y-Theater” at Youth Square is a fantastic venue, large and with all the bells and whistles a show might need – I did not even know it existed!

Review-Time Moves & My Robot Dream Lover-Deaf Drama Festival22-11-12

This was a first for me. I’ve watched mime artists perform sketches but never til now a full length narrative told without words on stage. And I loved it.

Review-Shen Wei Dance Arts- NVAF18-11-12

For the closing of this year’s New Vision Arts Festival, the organizer did not only invite the Shen Wei Dance Arts to perform, but also commissioned a site-specific (Cultural Centre foyer) dance piece from the group. Chinese-born, New York-based Shen Wei is perhaps best known as lead choreographer for the opening ceremonies of the 2008 Beijing Olympics, in which his scroll-painting dance was one of the many highlights.

Review-4:48 Psychosis- Theatron15-11-12

I have heard of “Psychosis 4:48” by Sarah Kane, but knew nothing about the author or the play. Psychology and dealing with mental illness are subjects that intrigue me and so I went eagerly to the McAulay Theater.
