Review-Bisous Follies-Bisous21-10-12

Bisous is a lounge bar in Central on Wellington Street. I was intrigued by it when I heard they do a standing follies show several nights a week. Rep entertainment is few and far between in Hong Kong so I hauled down to Bisous to check out the Follies girls. Performing four times a night on Wednesdays through Saturdays, the Follies are your typical showcase show. It's nice to see a bar in Hong Kong doing a glamorous showgirl revue as part of their standard entertainment. House bands are so last season and everyone loves a girl in a sparkly leotard.

Review-Beyond Time-NVAF20-10-12

Tonight HKELD was invited to attend the opening program of the New Vision Arts Festival in Hong Kong. They chose Theatre-U's Beyond Time to be the opening event as it was such a rousing success at the last festival. I happened to be sitting next to a lady who saw it two years ago. "Don't worry, you won't have to say much." she says. "It's very good." She was very wise as this was an excellent show for NVAF to open with. It was entertaining, inventive and an excellent showcase of Asian fusion artistry.

Review-A Doll's House-Theatre du Pif20-10-12

Henrik Ibsen’s classic A Doll’s House is the latest offering from Theatre du Pif and Canadian director Marjorie Chan, suggesting that traditions and values held in 19th century Norway are not so different from those held in modern Hong Kong society.

Review-Burn the Floor-Lunchbox Productions18-10-12

BURN THE FLOOR is an awe-inspiring tour de force of dance and spectacle that is not to be missed. For those who don’t know BURN THE FLOOR, it is a supercharged showcase of Latin, Swing, Ballroom and just a splash of Jazz and Contemporary Dance. It was originally conceived as a special 10 minute performance for Sir Elton John’s 50th Birthday in 1997 and inspired a fully realized production that debuted in the UK two years later. Since then it has had extended runs on Broadway and the West End and has captivated millions of people in over 30 countries over the past 14 years.

Review-Waiting for Godot-ABA Productions18-10-12

There’s two great downsides to producing a great play like Godot. First, everyone comes to it with high expectations ‘cos it’s a classic – and the higher the expectations, the harder they are to be met.

Review- Drag Overdose- Pink Season14-10-12

With all of the sequins and bangles and glitter they could find, the Queens (and a few Kings) of the night hit the town at Volume’s Beat in Sheung Wan. In true form, the evening that was meant to begin at 10:00pm didn’t really get going until nearly midnight. But when they arrived, they arrived in style. Hong Kong’s second annual Drag Overdose really brought it with fun and fabulousness.

Review-The Snail and the Whale-ABA Productions13-10-12

There is obviously a huge demand for high quality, children's entertainment in Hong Kong. ABA Productions has made it their mission to fill this void. Their most recent production is The Snail and the Whale playing at APA this weekend. It is adapted from the best selling picture book by Julia Donaldson and Alex Scheffler. Fans of the book will not be disappointed as the stage version has all the best parts of the book in it.

Review-To Kill a Mockingbird- Mockingbird Players/Asia Society12-10-12

Early in this play, Miss Maudie tells the children "it’s a sin to kill mockingbirds because all they do is sing all day." I’m reluctant to kill this particular Mockingbird but there are few moments in this earnest enactment of Harper Lee’s celebrated novel where things ‘sing’ or ‘take flight’.

Review-Journey to Atlantis-Mager&Smythe/DEER Theatre12-10-12

You may not be much interested in looking for the magical mythical city of Atlantis – but if you are looking for a mythically magical theatre experience, then you should definitely go ‘In Search Of [This] Atlantis' to discover it.

Review-La Traviata-Opera Hong Kong11-10-12

According to Opera Hong Kong's program, Verdi's La Traviata is the second most performed opera in the world. That means a lot of people do it and a lot of people love it. So when you do it - you have to do it well.
